A KVM cable connection consists of at least three separate cables: a monitor cable and a PS/2 cable each for mouse and keyboard. Conventional KVM cables tend to be problematic for several reasons:

  • The monitor cable must be high-grade and needs to have a dual screen, which makes it thick and inflexible.
  • Although the commonly available PS/2 cables are thin, they have only a single screen, which limits their length.
  • Laying these three cables individually usually results in an unsightly mess.
  • Combination cables, in which the PS/2 and monitor cables are "welded" together, presents a neater alternative, but are even less flexible than conventional monitor cables.
  • The bending forces - which are especially high with this type of cable - often cause one of the PS/2 plugs being inadvertently pulled out of their socket.
  • As the number of KVM switches mounted in a rack increases, the space taken up by the cables increases.

LEUNIG has solved this problem with its "round combination cable", which is no thicker than – but just as flexible as - a normal monitor cable and contains both PS/2 cables and the monitor cable. Its dual screen encloses the PS/2 as well as the monitor cables, making possible lengths clearly in excess of the usually available cables. The video quality (i.e. the bandwidth) of the round combination cable is excellent up to a distance of 15 metres and still good up to 20 metres. In addition, the cable is optimized for use in server rooms with high levels of electromagnetic interference.
