Inside Track
Genuinely Interesting Hardware Dept.: I don't think anyone would have predicted that I'd be writing about great cables, but here it is. Granite Digital makes legendary cables--and this is no joke. Specializing in SCSI cables and terminators, these cables are specially made to protect the ACK and REQ lines with special insulation. A high-dielectric PVC layer covers the cables, and internally there is loads of special shielding and ferrite beads. When you see one of these black beauties you'll immediately say, "Wow."

There was one way to find out: I called Granite Digital and asked them to send me a small 50-to-big-50 SCSIVue Gold Diagnostic Cable. I presume you can find other reliable sources of SCSI cables, but I am darned sure about Granite Digital. Their cables work, and the diagnostic flashing lights will tell you what's going on with your SCSI system.

That took care of the problem. As soon as we connected the tape drive with the Granite Digital cable, the AdvanSys controller recognized it. When we used a Granite Digital SCSIVue Gold Diagnostic Cable to connect the unit to the Distributed Processing Technology controller in Big Cheetah, that worked, too.

The moral of this story is simple: if you have a SCSI problem, first check termination. The easy way to do that is with one of the little Granite Digital SCSIVue Diagnostic Terminators. If termination is all right, try a cable known to be good, preferably one of the SCSIVue Gold Diagnostic Cables. So far I haven't had to do anything else. All my SCSI problems have been either termination or cables.

If you work with SCSI much, keep a Granite Digital SCSIVue Diagnostic Terminator and a few of its diagnostic cables around. They'll sure save you time and trouble. Highly recommended.

At this point I called the SCSI experts at Granite Digital. Granite makes diagnostic SCSI cables. They're not cheap, but they are extremely reliable. They have built-in red and green lights to indicate whether the SCSI setup is working properly.

One problem with setting up SCSI systems is that if something won't work, you don't know if it's the cable, or the termination, or the SCSI device itself. Fortunately, there's a remedy. Granite Digital makes a series of products, Active Diagnostic Terminators and Gold Diagnostic Cables, that let you diagnose cable problems.
For instance, you can connect one of your devices to the host computer using your own cable, terminate that device with one of their SCSIVue Terminators, and the blinking lights will soon tell you where the problem is. It's all explained quite clearly in the Granite Digital documents. If you're going to spend any time connecting external SCSI devices, you need these products. Granite Digital makes them in a variety of configurations for both Macs and PC Compatibles. Recommended.
